Academia on the Line is a podcast where two mathematicians and their guests explore current issues,
hot topics, and institutional challenges that are shaping mathematics, STEM, and higher education
as a whole. Listeners are invited to sit in on the kinds of conversations that are happening among academics
after seminars, at conferences, or over coffee.
Episode 1: On the Erdös unit distance problem and the role of AI in research mathematics
Guests: Daniel Litt and Melanie Matchett Wood
Episode 2: TBD
About the hosts:
Carina Curto is a professor of Applied Mathematics and
Brain Science at Brown University, and the Pablo J. Salame Goldman Sachs Professor of
Computational Neuroscience. Her research focuses on the theory and analysis of neural
networks and neural codes by developing novel applications of algebra, geometry, topology,
dynamical systems, and combinatorics to neuroscience.
Joel Fish is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Math Department
at the University of Massachusetts Boston. His research focuses on the study of symplectic geometry,
Hamiltonian dynamics, and pseudoholomorphic curves with a focus on polyfolds and developing
a feral curve theory. He is active in faculty governance and opines about issues affecting higher education.
